Based on their 2017 Tamil film of the same name and also drawing inspiration from the Indian folktale Baital Pachisi, Pushkar-2022 Gayathri’s Hindi-language neo-noir action thriller Vikram Vedha was written and directed. Together, YNOT Studios, Jio Studios, Theme Studios, T-Series Films, Friday Filmworks, and Reliance Entertainment produced the movie. Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Radhika Apte, Rohit Saraf, and Yogita Bihani also appear in supporting roles. It depicts the tale of an honorable policeman who embarks on a mission to find and assassinate a feared mobster.
Between October 2021 and June 2022, production took place. On September 30, 2022, the movie had a global theatrical release and was well praised by critics.
SSP Vikram is an honorable policeman with a clear-cut perception of right and wrong. Vedha is a notorious gangster from Kanpur who is aware of the subtleties in between. The STF, which was established to take out Vedha, is led by SSP Abbas, Vikram’s closest buddy. In one incident, the team takes off a few of Vedha’s goons while framing an unarmed criminal Vikram killed to evade further investigation. Vedha walks inside the police station and gives herself up voluntarily as the squad prepares for another encounter. Vedha offers to tell Vikram a story as he is questioning Vedha. The first act tells the story of Vedha, who grows into a feared mobster. Vedha cautions his younger brother Shatak, a mathematical prodigy, to stay away from crime, but Shatak is coerced into carrying drugs by rival thug Babloo. Shatak confesses and Babloo is taken into custody when he and his companion Chanda are apprehended by the police.
Babloo hits Shatak on the directive of his superior Shiv Prasad, putting a scar on his palm that won’t go away. Vikram is asked by Vedha whether he should kill Shiv Prasad or Babloo. Vedha suggests that Vikram killed Shiv Prasad in response to Vikram’s claim that Shiv Prasad was the genuine offender. Vikram’s wife Priya, who is Vedha’s attorney, steps in and saves him. Based on the mark on Shatak’s hand, Vikram realizes that the unarmed criminal they had framed in order to avoid an investigation was actually Shatak. Vikram goes to save Abbas because of fear that Vedha could try to kill him, but instead discovers Chanda and him shot to death. The IG writes it off as a mishandled incident. Priya declines to tell Vikram where Vedha is. This infuriates Vikram, who then searches Vedha’s tenements and succeeds in capturing him. Vikram is invited to hear another story by Vedha.
In the second act, an adult Shatak proposes using Vedha’s income as collateral by purchasing shares. Parshuram Pandey, the boss of Vedha, puts $130,000 (1 crore) into this project. But Chanda is allegedly being held captive, and the money is missing. When Chanda reappears, she confesses that she stole the money to start a new life but that she returned because she still loves Shatak. Vedha gives Pandey the money back and gets the go-ahead to murder Chanda. Vikram is asked by Vedha if he should obey Pandey and obey the order or disobey him and back Shatak and Chanda in order to start a gang war. Vedha concurs with Vikram’s recommendation that he assist Shatak in his response. When Vikram temporarily falters after realizing Shatak is innocent, Vedha strikes and subdues him and orders him to look into Shatak and Abbas’ deaths.
After following Abbas’ source to Shatak’s hiding place to start his inquiry, Vikram discovers that the informant has been murdered. He searches for the killer with his squad. When Vikram discovers the Mumbai Gang’s leader from Vedha’s tale, he pauses to reflect. After being captured and engaged in combat, the gang leader nearly killed Vikram before being shot and killed by a member of his unit, Deepak. When Vikram investigates his room, he comes across a cigar, but the cigar is actually loaded with marijuana rather than tobacco. When Vedha learns that Vikram believes Babloo is responsible for the incident, she takes Babloo to an abandoned factory. When Vikram arrives, he is greeted by Vedha, who informs him of the third and final act. Shatak and Chanda had been sent to Mumbai by Vedha. He realized that the police were solely focusing on and killing his guys and not Pandey’s.
In response to Babloo’s admission, Vedha claims that Abbas was paid by Babloo to kill his men, and he questions Vikram on whether or not Abbas was correct in becoming corrupt in order to pay for his son’s medical treatment. After discovering who had slain Abbas, Vikram is upset after Vedha kills Babloo. When the IG and the unit show up, they reprimand Vikram for allowing Vedha to go once more. Slowly, Vikram comes to terms with the fact that Babloo has also bought off the entire unit. According to IG, Babloo bribed them to kill Vedha, and Chanda’s kidnapping was done in an effort to draw Shatak away from Mumbai and out of hiding. Abbas, who was filled with guilt, had gone to save Chanda, but the unit had slain both of them. Vedha reappears and saves Vikram as the squad is about to execute him. In the ensuing gunfight, Vikram disables all of his teammates with Vedha’s assistance but kills the IG. In the ensuing confrontation, Vikram and Vedha argue about whether Vedha should murder the criminal or let him escape to save his own life.
Pushkar-Gayathri officially announced in March 2018 that they will be helming a Hindi version of their 2017 Tamil film Vikram Vedha, which would once again be made by YNOT Studios.
Neeraj Pandey acts as the creative producer on the movie, which is co-produced by Friday Filmworks, T-Series Films, and Reliance Entertainment. Pushkar-Gayathri wanted to keep the “gritty” feel of the original movie in the remake. Pandey was interested in working on this project because of its parallels to Vikramaditya and Betal from the folktale collection Baital Pachisi, which he felt was not yet done in Hindi cinema, despite the fact that he had previously avoided working on remakes because he preferred to write original material.
Shah Rukh Khan was asked to star in the movie but turned it down.
It was announced in August 2019 that Saif Ali Khan and Aamir Khan would play the roles of gangster Vedha and police officer Vikram, respectively.
Saif said Vikram is “far more vibrant, confident and strong” than Sartaj Singh, another police officer he portrayed in the streaming television series Sacred Games, adding that Singh was suicidal and frequently picked on by others. Vikram is also “much more strong” than Singh.
Due to his obligations to Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Pushkar-Gayathri stated that they were unable to have R. Madhavan return to the part of Vikram from the original (2022).
After the COVID-19 epidemic caused production delays, during which the writers also revised the script, Aamir departed the film in December 2020. Hrithik Roshan took over shortly after. After Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, this would be Saif and Roshan’s second appearance together on screen (2002). Roshan made the decision to talk with an Awadhi accent because Vedha is from Kanpur. Radhika Apte was cast in July to play Vikram’s lawyer wife, and Rohit Saraf joined the cast in August to play Vedha’s sibling. Sharib Hashmi was confirmed to play Babloo in the movie before November 2021. Yogita Bihani was selected to play Chanda in March 2022.
When Aamir Khan joined the cast in February 2021, principal photography was slated to start that month.
It was originally scheduled to begin once Roshan took his place in June 2021, but it actually did so on October 15 of that same year, with the inaugural schedule taking place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Before filming began, Vikram Vedha’s crew modified a portion of the Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) sets to mimic Lucknow and Kanpur. According to Reliance, UAE was “the only location providing the infrastructure for a bio-bubble that accommodated crew of such scale, also allowing building of sets in a studio during the preceding months of the shoot,” and the movie was shot there due to “health and protocol concerns” in response to reports that Roshan refused to shoot in Lucknow and asked the crew to create the Lucknow sets in Abu Dhabi, forcing the budget to increase. They stated that performers do not decide the shooting sites or the budget for their movies. The second schedule began in Lucknow in early December after the Abu Dhabi schedule concluded in just 27 working days. By the end of the month, Saif Ali Khan completed his parts of the schedule. Apte, whose shooting schedule was just 10 days long, completed most of her scenes by April 26, 2022.
Vishal-Shekhar and Sam C. S., the latter of whom scored the original Tamil film, wrote the songs heard in the movie. Sam also wrote the music for the movie. On September 17, 2022, “Alcoholia” and September 26, 2022, “Bande,” respectively, were released as singles.
On August 24, 2022, the teaser trailer for the movie was published.
It outperformed War (2019) as the most liked Hindi movie teaser on YouTube with more over a million likes in just 24 hours.
During the Navratri, Gandhi Jayanti, and pre-Dussehra celebrations on September 30, 2022, Vikram Vedha was theatrically released all over the world.
To safeguard the copyright of the movie before it was released, Reliance Entertainment won a broad injunction from the Madras High Court. Even before the movie was made publicly available, the court ordered Indian internet service providers to preemptively block more than 13,000 websites that Reliance feared were likely to host illicit copies of the movie based on their prior “non-compliant” business practices.
On its first day, Vikram Vedha brought approximately 10.58 crore at the domestic box office. The movie made 12.51 crore on the second day. The movie made 13.85 crore on its third day of business, bringing its domestic weekend earnings to 36.94 crore.
As of October 13, 2022, the movie had made 87.95 crore rupees ($11 million) in India and 39.11 crore rupees ($4.9 million) abroad, for a total worldwide revenue of 127.06 crore rupees ($16 million).
Critics gave Vikram Vedha favorable reviews.
Vikram Vedha is a wonderful massy fare that succeeds because of the strong script, unpredictable moments, outstanding performances by Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan, and the electrifying background score, according to Bollywood Hungama, which gave the movie a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. In a review for Times Now, Sanchita Jhunjhunwala gave the movie a score of four out of five “There are many high points in the picture, such as the narrative’s gradual escalation, the environment that its creators created, and the large cast of participants. There are some genuinely mind-blowing shots in the movie, and the filmmaker team deserves praise for them.” Indian Tushar Joshi Today gave the movie 3.5 stars and commented in their review “Massy without apology, Vikram Vedha. It’s also a lot of fun, and Hrithik and Saif are two excellent actors “. The Times of India’s Rachana Dubey gave the movie 3.5 stars and commented “Hrithik is in sections incredibly passionate, cruel, and threatening. Since Pushkar-Gayathri largely adhered to the blueprint they developed for the original, it’s a bonus that they haven’t much altered it “. News18’s Dishya Sharma gave the movie 3.5 stars and commented “A bloated movie with a good single-screen theater experience is Vikram Vedha. I would advise joining Vikram and Vedha in their game of cat and mouse and giving into Pushkar and Gayathri’s pretend world “. “Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan emanate a level of comfort that only two very secure performers could depict onscreen,” observed Mugdha Kapoor of DNA India in her 3.5 out of 5 star review. Filmfare’s Devesh Sharma gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated “The stylized action scenes in the movie are worth seeing. Hrithik’s part in the Parkour segment exhibits action choreography at its most creative. also for Saif Ali Khan’s and Hrithik Roshan’s excellent performances “.
It doesn’t get better than this, according to Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com, who gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated, “A screenplay and superstar in perfect combination”. Zee News’ Ritika Handoo gave the movie 3.5 stars and commented, “A mass entertainer, the film showcases some robust technical work, especially the snappy camerawork. The distinction between right and wrong is hazy in the movie, thus P.S. Vinod, the cinematographer, successfully captures the spirit of Kanpur and Lucknow by keeping the main lines’ pulse in his frames. Suresh Bishnoi of cinereveal.com gave the movie a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated, “Hrithik Roshan steals every frame of the movie; the first half isn’t great, but the second half is full of paisa wasool. The Quint’s Stutee Ghosh gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated, “Hritik and Saif seem to be having a great time. Even when the tempo lags or the movie feels overly stretched for its own good, their steady presence manages to keep us interested. ABP News’ Mahpara Kabir gave the movie 3.5 stars and stated “Vikram Vedha is a total masala entertainer with just the right amount of drama, action, and contemplation. It’s a treat to see Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan again on the big screen since they thrive in high-octane action. Two of the most attractive performers in the world give powerful performances in the movie “. With a unique blend of graphics, story, and acting, Mashable’s Sanyukta Thakare gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and commented, “Vikram Vedha is definitely the watch for this week.”
The movie received a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars from Bharathi Pradhan of Lehren, who described it as a “double victory.” “Saif and Hrithik give powerful performances in which one. The second is the husband-and-wife team’s distinctive, layered style, which is awesomeness in both the action and the visuals and is presented with a recognizable background score “. Outlook’s Prateek Sur gave the movie 3.5 stars and commented in his review “They didn’t try to imitate, but rather stayed faithful to the original and gave the entertainment factor top importance. Although it may have a few flaws with its duration and music-choreography, it’s still a good movie overall “. After a long time, two top-flight performers like Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan sink their teeth into a proper plot that comes before them, according to Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express, who gave the movie three out of five stars. According to Abhimanyu Mathur of the Hindustan Times “Both as a thriller and a masala action movie, Vikram Vedha succeeds. In a crowded audience, it even garners a few whistles and applause because it is entertaining “. NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee gave the movie three out of five stars and commented “Vikram is performed significantly better by Saif Ali Khan. Hrithik Roshan uses his celebrity power and on-screen presence to produce quality work “. Deccan Herald critic R Krishnakumar gave the movie a score of three out of five and stated, “Vikram Vedha needed some more of that kind of creative lunacy to push it beyond what it ends up being: an almost decent, risk-free remake.” This Hindi Vikram Vedha preserves the swag of the Tamil original, but some small modifications in it are fascinating in what they disclose about the team’s appraisal of north Indian viewers, according to Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost, who gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars.
The movie received a 3.5 out of 5 star rating and was described as a “hero-laden visual spectacle” by Manjusha Radhakrishnan of Gulf News.
